Bootsy Collins
Bootsy Collins reached stardom after cutting his teeth as a bass player with James Brown’s band The J.B.s and with the Parliament-Funkadelic collective in the 70s. The songs on those albums have been sampled by rappers like N.W.A., Tupac, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Notorious B.I.G., EPMD, Big Daddy Kane, Ice Cube and others. Rappers like Chuck D., Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg have returned the favor, by joining Bootsy on Tha Funk Capitol of the World, Bootsy’s first official album in over five years. In addition to the rap stars, Tha Funk Capitol of the World boasts appearances by Samuel J. Jackson, the Reverend Al. Sharpton, Dr. Cornel West and banjo player Bela Fleck. Outside of recording his own album, Bootsy has stayed busy over the past few months. He was recently in the studio with Kanye West, T-Pain, R. Kelly and Snoop Dogg. Bootsy is also working with William Shatner and legendary singer Sly Stone, for upcoming albums. Bootsy now lives in his hometown of Cincinnati, OH, and spends much of his time producing Movie, Video Game and Animation scores, along with producing and mentoring young talent in live bass workshops and via the world’s first ever Funk University, an online bass guitar school.
Divinity Roxx
Divinity Roxx is the musical director for Beyonce’s band, Suga Mama and got her big break touring for Victor Wooten. She is a dynamic musical artist – world renowned bass player, acclaimed rapper and producer. Growing up in , Divinity started rapping in junior high school and began playing the bass in college. She soon found she had the ability to play ferocious bass lines and spit out poignant rap lines simultaneously and this grabbed the attention of Victor Wooten, arguably one of the best bass-players in the world. Divinity was a featured part of Wooten’s live show from 2001 through 2005 and can be heard on two of his albums, Live In America (2001, Compass) and Soul Circus (2005, Vanguard). She is currently working on a solo record set for release later this year.
John B Williams
John B. Williams’ career spans over 50 years as a bassist, singer, composer and actor. From growing up to the sounds of Sonny Rollins practicing bass two doors down from his New York home to working with legends like Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Horace Silver and Roy Ayers, John B. Williams is one of the last living links between the funk era and the jazz era that preceded it. Williams was part of Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show band through the early ’70s, and the Arsenio Hall Show band through the early ’90s. John B’s uniquely textured bass style has been described as ‘something you don’t just hear but can feel down to your bones’ and can be heard on his long-anticipated solo debut, “Gratitude,” released in 2005. He is currently mixing his sophomore solo effort for Alessa Records as well as working on a spoken-word CD with his wife, Jessie.
Jean-Paul Bourelly
Bourelly started to play the guitar in at age 13. In his late teens he moved to and already began working with a string of jazz greats including Chico Hamilton, Elvin Jones, Cassandra Wilson and Miles Davis. The guitarist’s furious blues rock and fusion skills are built upon a solid foundation in jazz. Having played live with the likes of the incredible Darryl Jones, Steve Coleman, Von Freeman, Olu Dara, Pharaoh Sanders, and Henry Threadgill, his intuitive knowledge of the fretboard is envy-inducing. After beginning his solo career in 1987, he began spreading his wings into rock music too. From a stint in the Black Rock Coalition, he also got the chance to jam with blues rock icons Buddy Miles, Jack Bruce and Robin Trower. Bourelly now lives in where he has put together a string of intriguing projects that highlight the multiple sides of his ongoing sonic narrative.
Jonas Hellborg
TM Stevens
TM Stevens records and tours with his band Shocka Zooloo, a power trio that to date has released seven albums. Stevens is a luminary figure in the world of music and here his list of collaborators speaks for itself: Miles Davis, James Brown, John McLaughlin,The Pretenders, Tina Turner, Cyndi Lauper, Narada Michael Walden, Steve Vai, 2Pac and Living Color to name only a few. He also records and tours the world regularly with his band Shocka Zooloo. The flamboyant performer’s skill and proficiency globally as a bassist and vocalist is legendary. He has unbelievable energy, stunning stage presence and knows how to win a crowd over within minutes. TM has continued to do a healthy amount of session work during the 21st century, including a posthumous album by rapper Tupac Shakur.
Blackbyrd MkNnight
Blackbyrd MkNnight was the Band Director, lead guitarist, and a songwriter for George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic/P-Funk All Stars. In the early stages of his career, Blackbyrd worked with Jazz musicians, such as Charles Lloyd, Sonny Rollins, and Herbie Hancock. He then directed his path towards funk when he joined George Clinton & The Pfunk in 1978. Other than working with Pfunk artists such as George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, and Bernie Worrell, Blackbyrd has also worked with Miles Davis, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ron Wood & Bernard Fowler of the Rolling Stones, Bill Laswell, HR of Bad Brains, Macy Gray, and Fishbone to name but a few. Blackbyrd has appeared on a slew of television shows including Saturday Night Live and the David Letterman Show. His recent work has been with Will Calhoun from Living Colour and Melvin Gibbs from The Rollins Band and was just recently cited by Outkast as being their inspiration for the guitar parts on their hit “Bombs over ”.
Paul Rose
Paul Rose is without doubt one of the most talented guitarists in the world today. Jazz, blues, country and folk styles all play a part in Paul’s eclectic guitar playing. He was elected as best guitarist of the when he was just 16 years old. This was an award which still means a lot to him because the man who chose him as the winner was the legendary Rory Gallagher. In 1995 Paul won the “Guitarist Of The Year” award from Guitarist Magazine (UK). In addition to working steadily as session-musician over the years his main focus is his own projects where he plays with renowned musicians such as Michael Schenker and Ted McKenna. Paul is now breaking into the German market having played several highly successful tours there over the last 2 years, combined with the new CD & DVD. It is looking highly likely that Paul is facing a future just as spectacular as his musical gift.
Lee Sklar
As famous for his foot-long beard as he is for his deep-pocketed grooves, Lee Sklar is one of the most sought after and prolific bassists in the world. Sklar has more than 2000 albums to his credit starting with James Taylor in the 60′s, Linda Ronstat in the 70′s, Phil Collins in the 90′s and is now currently a member of Toto. From 1972 to 1977 he was a member of the studio session mafia simply known as “The Section” who played on just about every rock pop album of that era – His playing can been heard on hits by The Doors, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Hall & Oates, Donovan, Jackson Browne, and Joe Cocker to name just a few. More recently, Sklar has taken on projects with Matchbox 20, Kid Rock and Lisa Loeb. Throughout his career television and motion picture directors have also called upon Sklar and his talents countless times – He has played on soundtracks to TV shows such as Hill Street Blues and Knight Rider, and also on many motion picture soundtracks including Forrest Gump, Ghost, Kindergarten Cop, and My Best Friend’s Wedding.
Steve Bailey
Steve Bailey is famous for his pioneering work with the six string fretless bass. He was voted runner up for “Bass Player Of The Year” in 1994 and 1996. Bass Player magazine has called him “the Christopher Columbus of the six string fretless bass”. His career includes many years in the LA studios working on albums in a plethora of styles as well as numerous TV shows and commercials.
In 1992 Steve formed the cutting edge bass duo, BASS EXTREMES, with fellow bassist Victor Wooten, releasing DVDs, CDs and transcription books, in addition to seven books and three DVD’s of his own. His latest solo album, ‘So Low….. Solo’ is a critically acclaimed work featuring Steve’s innovative techniques in an unaccompanied setting. Steve has toured and recorded with a huge range of artists including Dizzy Gillespie, Jethro Tull, The Rippingtons, and Willie Nelson.
Ryan Martinie
Ryan Martinie’s complex and aggressive playing is explicitly stamped over every release by metal band Mudvayne. His sharp attack, pulled from a myriad of techniques and ideas, has not only expanded the metal bass player’s repertoire in general, but given Ryan the reputation of a unique and endlessly innovative player. In his early days, Ryan studied jazz bass and there is a big influence of funk and flamenco in his playing. His musical contributions – from his own octave tapping to flamenco style rolls in a heavy context – have established him as one of his generation’s finest. Martinie’s trademark sounds are his unique heavy fingering and tapping technique. Someone said once: “Rock has Flea, but metal has Ryan Martinie”.
Earl Slick
Earl Slick’s status as legendary sideman to David Bowie – though magnificent, with his work on ‘Stay’ being one of the highlights of ’s career – doesn’t take into account the rest of this classic guitarist’s superb history.
He has played for The Cure’s Robert Smith, Whitesnake’s David Coverdale as well as forming the band Slinky Vagabond with ex- Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock. Between record sessions and tours with , Slick also became a hired gun for Leo Sayer, Ian Hunter and was even personally invited by John Lennon to play on his Double Fantasy album, Lennon’s final studio work. He also formed his own solo band – Seven solo albums spanning 35 years have showcased his smooth yet unrestrained playing technique, all double stops and tasteful riffs.
Mordy Ferber
Mordy Ferber’s history of playing is a tale in itself – from having to play for two years in the Israeli army band as part of a three year military conscription, to playing with Jerry Lewis and a host of top Israeli singers.
After emigrating to the on a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in and drawing inspiration from the exceptional jazz scenes there, he moved to to begin his solo career. As a master jazz improviser he’s had the opportunity to play with Michael Brecker, Peter Erskine, Eddie Gomez and Jack DeJohnette. Mordy currently does commission work for television shows and movies. His work has been used on many television shows such as the Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Jack Ass, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Everybody Loves Raymond.
